Learn the ‘nuts and bolts’ of it. Assignments vary but can include on-line, library or archival research linked to art by women in Italy. Volunteers should expect to compile research on museums and museum holdings and to insert information gathered into AWA’s archival and photographic database. Volunteers will also be assigned to create content on female artists and works present in Italian museum collections, which will then be submitted for approval. Research Volunteers will be credited on-line for their content, if accepted.

What do AWA’s Volunteer Mentors do?
Mentors are Florence-based art professionals who provide feedback to Research volunteers. This can include assigning and following up on new tasks, providing logistical research guidance and assistance with content-creation for the AWA database.

Qualifications
AWA accepts Research volunteers of all ages and walks of knowledge. University affiliation is not mandatory. Skill set must include a knowledge of Word and Excel, and on-line research skills. A knowledge of Italian is preferred but not mandatory.

Where do I start?
Please complete and submit our on-line Volunteer Application Form. The form includes the submission of a CV (max. 2 pages) and includes a 500-word writing sample on a topic relevant to art by women. Upon selection for phase-two of the application process, applicants undergo a phone interview.

Volunteer perks in Florence
Once per term, AWA offers Research Volunteers and Mentors a complementary tour of a Florence-based museum to view art by women. Our volunteers are also entitled to one studio visit per term, gaining access to a working restoration laboratory in Florence or Tuscany. During their stay, Volunteers will receive invitations to in-town events organized for the general public. AWA awards a Certificate of Participation to Volunteers successfully completing their program.
