October lecture series organized by AWA and Il Palmerino

Understanding Florence’s artisan district through the centuries. On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, join AWA for an in-person lecture in Italian entitled ‘The Heart of San Frediano: 8 Centuries of solidarity’ at Il Palmerino, in Florence. Speakers Maurizio Naldini and Giovanna Carrocci will be discussing the identity of a neighborhood that developed thanks to craftsmanship and its spirit of solidarity through the centuries. They will focus on San Frediano’s commitment to the protection of society’s weakest and the efforts of historic twentieth-century philanthropic figures like Don Cubattoli, Fioretta Mazzei and Ghita Vogel. On Wednesday, 21 October 2020, we’ll be presenting ‘Trades of the Oltrarno: Training, then and now’ a round-table lecture with Pilar Lebole, Roberto Ciulli, Laura Felice, focusing on historic and present-day Oltrarno institutions dedicated to artisans and their training. There’s a multi-century presence in Florence of age-old traditions and creative transformation: Istituto Pio X Artigianelli, Pio Istituto dei Bardi and the Scuola d’Arte of Porta Romana. Where and when: Colonica Villa Il Palmerino, via del Palmerino 6; 5pm. Reservations are required: associazione@palmerino.it. These events form part of the ‘Oltrarno Gaze’ lecture series, flanking ‘Victoria Slichter: The Oltrarno Gaze’, the portrait exhibition on show at Il Palmerino until November 2, 2020.
