The Tuscan artist sees self-depiction as a play on light. This 2018 restoration was part of the show Women Artists: Firenze, 1900-1950. Leonetta Pieraccini Cecchi’s Self-portrait in backlight is an oil painted on cardboard. Here’s conservator Rossella Lari’s take on it: ‘The painting was executed using heavily-loaded brushstrokes and willful chiaroscuro effects, which the artist obtained by mixing various colors on her palette in order to achieve the color nuances she wanted. The quest for luminescence proves particularly important in the two self-portraits; indeed, achieving chromatic contrast appears to have been more vital to Pieraccini than rendering physical traits in a detailed manner. In fact, the protagonist’s features remain virtually undefined.
