Does Pincherle’s technique reveal her character? Pincherle’s painterly style of creating emotionally intriguing portraits relied heavily on her method of using large quantities of paint applied with a spatula along all contours and enlivened by adding quick turns of her wrist to allow underlying colors to become visible. What emerges is a deeply engaging picture of her sitter, or in this case, herself and letting the viewer imagine what conversations may be occupying her thoughts. The painting, on display at Florence’s Gabinetto G.P. Vieusseux was restored by AWA in 2016.
