Florence’s first artist practices with well-loved theme. Italy’s first art historian Giorgio Vasari was a contemporary of Nelli and he wrote about her work in his famed Lives, in which is chronicles the foremost artists in history. Nelli was among them! In her essay ‘In the Shadow of the Friar’ on Plautilla Nelli’s drawings, project curator Marzia Faietti writes, “The end of Vasari’s note on Nelli demonstrates the logic of his reasoning, suggesting that if we really want to get an idea of the highest criteria of quality expressed by Nelli, we must consider the faces of the women in her surviving paintings and, for our purposes, the drawings attributed to her.” Nelli’s Seated Madonna Nursing was restored by AWA’s founder Jane Fortune in 2007.
