Naturalism and ‘lyrical sensitivity’. This quote from When the World Answered by Jane Fortune and Linda Falcone provides insight on Maugham’s inspiration: “Exposed to the Riviera breeze, it was this landscape that inspired cultured English painter Daphne Maugham, moving her to create a substantial collection of plein air works, depicting western Liguria with her typically subtle Post-Impressionist style. Maugham was often a guest at Rita Saglietto’s villa in the appealing ridge town of Poggio Imperia and the two artists cultivated a lasting friendship, brought together by their equally reserved temperaments and love for bright naturalism. Enthralled by this small strip of land overlooking the sea, they shared the same brand of what Blasi called ‘introspective lyrical sensitivity’ and sought to capture the mood, ambience and charm of a Mediterranean landscape.” The painting, restored by AWA in 2016, was exhibited as part of the ‘Beyond Borders’ exhibition as a commemorative event for the Florence flood’s 50th anniversary.
