Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the world’s greatest Baroque artists is celebrated for interpreting Caravaggio’s revolutionary painting style. The recent revival and re-evaluation of her courageous life and works spurred the restoration of one of the artist’s lesser-known works: David and Bathsheba. Completed in Naples in 1635, the painting was part of the Grand Ducal Collections and had been languishing in the Pitti Palace’s storage deposits for centuries. The quest to salvage the badly-damaged masterpiece also provides a fascinating window on the artist’s years in Florence, where she worked as a court painter for the Medici Dynasty, following her torturous rape trial.
